Your Complete Valpo Guide to Steak, Seafood & Fine Dining

Photo provided by Martinis in Valpo
Northwest Indiana doesn’t usually get mentioned in the same breath as Chicago’s legendary steak row. But if you know where to look in Valparaiso, you’ll find a dining scene that earns the comparison — charcoal-grilled prime rib, 21-day aged choice cuts, tableside flambéed saganaki, Spanish swordfish steak, Angus prime rib sandwiches stacked with peppers and Swiss, and sizzling steak fajitas built from scratch with fresh ingredients.
Whether you’re a Valpo local, a weekend visitor from Chicago or Indianapolis, or just someone who refuses to accept a mediocre steak, this guide covers every steakhouse restaurant in Valparaiso. All listings are part of the Valpo Restaurants Directory, the only dining guide built and maintained by the local restaurants themselves.

Martinis — Valparaiso’s Original Scratch Kitchen Steakhouse

Martinis is one of those Valparaiso restaurants that locals claim as their own — and for good reason. Chef-Owner Louis Kalafatis built Martinis from the ground up on a scratch kitchen philosophy, sourcing fresh local produce and developing recipes over decades of practice. The result is a restaurant that spans steaks, seafood, Mediterranean cuisine, Italian, pizza, and burgers without losing focus on any of them.
The steak program is serious. Cuts are cooked fresh to order and the menu earns consistent praise for being the kind of steak that ‘melts in your mouth.’ The signature Angus Prime Rib Sandwich — grilled and sliced prime rib piled on toasted Italian bread, covered in melted Swiss, mushrooms, onions, and red peppers with au jus — is a Valpo institution unto itself. The Blackened Steak Burger, handmade and topped with caramelized onions, candied bacon, and roasted red pepper aioli, shows how seriously Martinis takes even its casual beef program.
Beyond steak, the menu runs deep: Lamb Porterhouse Chops , Chicken Milanese, saganaki flambéed tableside, hand-cut salmon steak grilled with lemon and dill, Greek pork chops, and pizza from hand-tossed dough. Martinis is also the rare steakhouse open for lunch — Tuesday through Saturday starting at 11am.
The restaurant recently completed a full renovation that earned the Community Improvement Award from the Valpo Chamber and the City of Valpo. Four distinct dining spaces, a full bar, and a room that feels genuinely local — not corporate chain, not pretentious fine dining, but exactly right for Valparaiso.

El Salto Restaurant — Sizzling Steak & Seafood with Mexican Flair

El Salto Restaurant brings bold, authentic Mexican flavors to Valparaiso with a steak and seafood menu built around fresh ingredients and made-from-scratch recipes. It’s become one of the most popular dining destinations on Calumet Avenue — and for anyone who hasn’t discovered it yet, the Molcajete alone is worth the trip.
The steak program at El Salto is rooted in Mexican culinary tradition — skirt steak and fajita-cut beef appear throughout the menu, sizzled on a hot comal with grilled tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers. The Texanas Fajitas bring chicken, skirt steak, and shrimp together on a single sizzling platter, while the Molcajete — served in a giant stone Mexican mortar — loads shrimp, steak, chicken breast, and chorizo with toppings that make it one of the most talked-about dishes in the Valpo dining scene.
The seafood side is just as strong: Mahi Mahi tacos with El Salto’s house sauce, chipotle shrimp, shrimp cocktail with fresh avocado, and hand-breaded calamari with chipotle aioli. Margaritas come in 30-ounce servings and are available in a wide range of flavors. The atmosphere is warm, family-friendly, and genuinely festive.
El Salto has six locations across Northwest Indiana, with the Valparaiso location serving as a proud part of the local restaurant community and a member of the Valpo Restaurant Board.

Don Quijote — Indiana’s Only Spanish Restaurant

For 41 years, Don Quijote has been one of the most remarkable dining destinations in Northwest Indiana — pulling guests from Chicago, Indianapolis, and across the Midwest to a corner of downtown Valparaiso that feels unmistakably like Spain. Owners and chefs Carlos Rivero and Elena Jambrina, both natives of Spain, built something with no equivalent anywhere in the state.
The steak and meat program at Don Quijote is distinctly Iberian: swordfish steaks, grilled shellfish, skewered pork and veal, and Castilian-style roast lamb cooked with the care and technique of a family that grew up feeding people. The tapas menu runs 25 options deep — calamares, octopus, Galician stuffed meat pastries, Spanish potato omelet — and two versions of paella serve as the undisputed centerpiece of the menu.
The dining room features intricate iron décor and hand-painted murals depicting Don Quijote de la Mancha, the 17th-century literary figure and the restaurant’s namesake. The outdoor patio on Michigan Avenue is one of downtown Valpo’s best — shaded, atmospheric, and the right backdrop for a bottle of Spanish wine and a long evening.
Annual events have taken on legendary status in the region: the Live Flamenco Dinner & Show draws reservations months out, and the Wild Game Dinner — featuring 20 species including fresh alligator and kangaroo — has become the kind of event people talk about all year. Don Quijote is a Travelers’ Choice winner on TripAdvisor and rated #6 of all Valparaiso restaurants. Reservations strongly recommended.

Kelsey’s Steakhouse — The Classic Charcoal House
Family-owned for over 30 years, Kelsey’s Steakhouse is the name most Valpo locals reach for when someone asks ‘where do you get a steak around here?’ All steaks are USDA choice, aged a minimum of 21 days, and cooked to order over a charcoal grill — a process you can actually watch through the restaurant’s grillside window.
Prime Rib is the house specialty. The seafood program runs on fresh catch flown in daily from Hawaii — 48 hours from ocean to plate. Favorites include the Delmonico ribeye, bourbon-glazed wild salmon, and a seafood bisque loaded with lobster, shrimp, bay scallops, crab, and sole. Look for ‘Howie the Cow’ out front. Kelsey’s is rated #4 of all Valparaiso restaurants.
